Dangerous Defect: Over 300,000 Affected by Recall

(BrightPress.org) – BMW is having a tough time lately. The company first recalled nearly 400,000 3 Series models for airbag issues in July. Then, another 1,145 cars got pulled back for the same problem. Now, it’s the turn of the 2018-2023 X3 models. A massive 292,112 X3 SUVs have been recalled. The issue? The interior cargo rail can get damaged in a rear-end collision, possibly coming loose and putting passengers at risk.

This might not sound too serious, but it can be dangerous. In a rear-end crash, the cargo rail can detach and hit the occupants, increasing the risk of injury, especially for those in the second row. The X3 is a popular family SUV, often used to transport kids, making this recall particularly concerning.

This latest recall involves 2018-23 BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 M40i, X3 xDrive30i, and X3 M models.

BMW discovered the defect after a 2022 BMW X3 became involved in a severe rear-end crash in August 2022. The owner got legal counsel, so BMW couldn’t initially get details about the crash. However, in March 2024, BMW was legally served and finally inspected the vehicle. This led to the decision to issue a voluntary safety recall to ensure maximum safety.

It’s unclear if anyone from the 2022 accident was injured due to this problem. Because of the legal protective orders, most details will not be released to the public.

Though 292,112 vehicles are involved, BMW estimates that only 1% of X3s are actually affected. Owners should take their cars to a BMW dealership for an inspection, where the rear cargo rail attachment bolts will be replaced at no cost. Dealer notification was set for July 17th, and owner notification is planned for August 30th, 2024. Owners can also call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

This recall is likely a precautionary measure, especially after the unnamed customer’s decision to file a lawsuit against BMW.
