IRS Visited Twitter Files Journalist Matt Taibbi The Same Day He Testified

(BrightPress.org) – In a stunning coincidence – or example of the very thing the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government is chartered to investigate – Twitter Files journalist Matt Taibbi received a home visit from IRS agents on the same day he was scheduled to testify before that same committee.

Taibbi discovered he had been visited by IRS agents via a letter that was left behind which instructed him to call the IRS within four days. Taibbi was later informed that the visitation had to do with his 2018 and 2021 tax returns being rejected over “concerns” regarding “identity theft.”

Select Subcommittee Chairman Jim Jordan mailed a letter to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen demanding an explanation for the visit, according to the Wall Street Journal. Their op-ed on the subject called the visit “a very strange house call” and suggested there were legitimate “questions about potential intimidation.”

Democratic disdain for Taibbi and his work with the Twitter Files was on full display when, during his introductory remarks, Rep. Stacey Plasket (D-V.I.) called him a “so-called journalist” before he had so much as uttered a word. Jim Jordan was sure to fire back at her for that one, but it betrayed the aggression and contempt Democratic lawmakers hold for anyone who presents information that challenges their narratives.

The WSJ op-ed reported that Taibbi gave Jim Jordan documentation showing his 2018 return was accepted previously and that there was no issue flagged until the present. They also pointed out that standard practice for the IRS is to send a letter in the mail or attempt to schedule a meeting at their offices; they normally do not send agents to homes for unannounced visits.

Fellow Twitter Files journalist and committee witness Michael Shellenberger called the visit “an amazing coincidence,” while Elon Musk suggested it was “very odd.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted that the visit “stinks to high heaven,” and mentioned the IRS’s curious history of harassing political enemies of the Democrats.
