Monterey Park Mass Shooter Identified; Second Attack Foiled

(BrightPress.org) — A community is searching for answers after 72-year-old Huu Can Tran opened fire in Monterey Park, California on Sunday, January 22nd killing ten people who were attending Lunar New Year celebrations at a local venue outside of Los Angeles.

Being called the deadliest attack since the Uvalde shooting last year, little is known about the suspect or his motives. There are no online profiles for the elderly shooter. Tran used a semiautomatic pistol with an extended magazine when he opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park.

Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Wiese said that officers were on the scene within three minutes of receiving the call. The shooter had already left in a van. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said that Tran had attempted to attack a second location in the nearby city of Alhambra twenty to thirty minutes after the first attack, but was foiled by a young man who wrestled the gun away from him.

The New York Times reported that 26-year-old Brandon Tsay saw Tran brandish the pistol and point it at him when he entered the Lai Lai Ballroom where Tsay works. He said he “acted on instinct” expecting the worst. He was able to wrestle the gun away from Tran. Police say he had help from an additional person while his family say their security footage shows he acted alone to prevent further tragedy.

Tran fled the scene and was found 22 miles away in Torrance. After a tense standoff with police that lasted several hours, police swarmed and entered the vehicle to find Tran dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He apparently had a second weapon in his vehicle.

His motive was not immediately apparent, as an Asian man attacking his own community the corporate media will not be able to blame white supremacy on this one, so expect little coverage. They will undoubtedly find time to advocate for dismantling the Second Amendment, however. California has its share of gun violence for a state that boasts how much they restrict law-abiding citizens from defending themselves.
