(BrightPress.org) – In Columbus, Ohio, tragedy struck when a dedicated mother, Alexa Stakely, died while trying to protect her 6-year-old son from a carjacker. Stakely, a speech-language pathologist at Winchester Trail Elementary, lost her life in a selfless act of bravery.
The incident took place at the White Oak Park Condominiums at about 1:30 a.m. on July 11th. Alexa, 29, went to pick up her son from the babysitter. After placing her sleeping child in the car, she returned inside to grab his belongings. The car was left running.
In that brief moment, someone attempted to steal the car. Alexa saw the thief and yelled for them to stop, saying her child was inside. When the carjacker continued, she jumped onto the hood of her Honda-CRV. Unfortunately, she fell off and suffered critical injuries. She passed away later at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
Witnesses reported seeing two males fleeing from the car, which was found abandoned with the child still asleep inside. Police believe these men were part of a group seen earlier that night, looking into apartments in the area. Sgt. James Fuqua stated that the suspects knew what they had done and urged the public to review security footage that might aid the investigation.
Alexa’s younger brother, Hayden Swartz, described her as an amazing mother and a passionate educator. He called on those responsible to come forward and face justice.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to support Alexa’s son, and the community has rallied around the family. Initially, the goal was to raise $15,000, but so far $75,000 has been donated.
A public vigil will be held at Winchester Trail Elementary, where Alexa worked and made a significant impact on the lives of many students.
In her dedication to her work and her child, Alexa Stakely exemplified selflessness and love. Her tragic death has left a void in the community, but her legacy of kindness and sacrifice will be remembered by those who knew her.
