(BrightPress.org) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned his Cabinet on July 14th, following the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump, that similar threats exist in Israel.
Netanyahu has faced intense protests and threats since taking office after the November 2022 elections and implementing judicial reforms. The protests, supported by the Biden administration, paused after the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, but have since resumed, deepening political divides.
Netanyahu emphasized the lack of tangible action against these threats, contrasting it with past enforcement against right-wing elements. He criticized the unequal enforcement of the law.
Netanyahu called for a serious response, noting that the recent assassination attempt on Trump served as a warning. He stated that there are attempts to normalize attacks on democracy. These attacks include blocking highways with fire, throwing grenades at police, and protesting with torches.
Reflecting on past events, he mentioned the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by a right-wing extremist in November 1994. In a message to Former President Trump, Netanyahu expressed shock over the assassination attempt and sent prayers for a quick recovery. He emphasized that the attack was not just against Trump but against democracy itself.
During July 14th’s cabinet meeting, ministers watched a video of people in Israel calling for the murder of public officials, including the prime minister. Netanyahu explained that Israel is experiencing similar calls to incitement as seen in the U.S.
On the war front in Gaza, Netanyahu hinted that the Israel Defense Forces might have killed a top Hamas commander, Mohammed Deif.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told military personnel that the pursuit of Hamas terrorists would continue for years.
Israel’s leaders believe the nine-month war in Gaza is wearing down Hamas. However, talks for a ceasefire deal to free Hamas-held hostages might have stalled. Hamas accuses Israel of introducing new conditions, while Netanyahu claims Hamas has presented 29 changes to the deal.
