Erdman testified that CIA scientific analysts repeatedly concluded between 2021 and 2023 that a lab leak from China was the most likely source of the virus, yet those findings were softened, buried, or never shared with Congress. Erdman told senators that intelligence community leaders and senior analysts “downplayed” the lab-leak possibility and that their actions, whether intentional or not, resulted in a cover-up. According to his account, CIA managers ordered late-night rewrites of reports that had supported the lab-leak theory, turning firm conclusions into vague “non-call” judgments that did not commit to any clear origin.
