The rapid jump forced new evacuation orders for more nearby zones.

Fire officials described steep, rugged terrain and heavy vegetation, which made access difficult for crews and limited where they could build control lines. Highway 1 Closure Disrupts Travel

The California Highway Patrol closed a long section of Highway 1 to keep drivers away from the fire zone and help residents leave safely. One report said the shutdown covered nearly 16 miles between Point Sur Lighthouse and Partington Cove, a stretch that sits at the center of the Big Sur coastline. Another report said people could still pass through the closure if they were evacuating.

The closure adds pressure to a region that depends on Highway 1 for daily travel and tourism. Evacuation Zones Expand Around Big Sur

CAL FIRE said zones MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027, and MRY-F028-A were under evacuation orders, while other nearby zones remained under evacuation warnings. Earlier updates also showed orders for MRY-F026 and MRY-F027 and warnings for surrounding areas, including places near the Ventana area of Big Sur. Those shifts show how quickly the risk zone widened as the fire grew.
