(BrightPress.org) – Presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has clarified his stance on abortion rights and both sides of the political arena are unhappy. This reversal has taken the wind out of Biden’s sails, as he can no longer frame Trump as an abortion-banning boogeyman. However, Trump’s comments have also drawn criticism from pro-life Republicans.
On Monday, April 8th, Trump posted a four-minute video on Truth Social clarifying his opinion that abortion limits should be left for individual states to decide. In the video, Trump took credit for “ending” Roe v. Wade which now allows states to set their own limits by vote or legislation. Trump believes this will put the decision on limits at the “will of the people.”
States have already begun to move in different directions since Roe v. Wade was upended. Many states have banned abortion at all stages of pregnancy, while others still allow abortions after 24 weeks.
SBA Pro-Life America responded with disappointment in Trump’s position. Marjorie Dannenfelser, the group’s president, stated that women and their unborn children deserved to be protected from the “brutality” of the abortion industry.
Senator Lindsay Graham and Mike Pence expressed their disappointment. Graham said he “respectfully” disagrees with Trump’s opinion that abortion is a matter for the states. Pence, Trump’s former vice-president, said Trump’s stance is a “slap in the face” to pro-life Americans.
The Biden administration is highlighting how difficult it is for women in states where abortion has been completely banned to receive proper care for reproductive issues. Kaitlyn Kash from Texas had to travel out of state for healthcare after a miscarriage and then had difficulty receiving another needed procedure after a successful birth. Amanda Zurawski, also from Texas said she “nearly died twice” after being denied life-saving medical care following a miscarriage due to doctors’ fear of legal repercussions.
In Alabama, lawmakers promised to protect IVF providers from legal liability after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are protected as children under state law.
In Trump’s video, he told Republicans to follow their heart on the issue of abortion but also stressed that elections must be won to “restore our culture and…save our country.”
