(BrightPress.org) – Former President Donald Trump seems to be questioning Gov. Doug Burgum’s chances as his potential vice-presidential pick due to Burgum’s strong pro-life record. Burgum’s consistent pro-life policies could be a problem for his vice-presidential aspirations.
North Dakota’s governor has one of the toughest pro-life policies in the country, outlawing most abortions except in cases that pose serious health risks to the mother. Abortions in cases of rape or incest are allowed up to six weeks. Burgum signed these measures into law after they were approved by the state legislature.
Trump’s shortlist for vice president also includes Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. However, Trump noted that having Rubio as a running mate complicates things since both he and Rubio reside in Florida. This issue arises from a Constitutional statute that prevents state electors from voting for both a president and vice president from their own state. Either Trump or Rubio would need to change their home state designation before the election.
Trump has stated that he intends to announce his vice-presidential pick at the Republican National Convention next week or possibly just before the event begins. His public musings have added suspense, with Trump teasing Sen. Marco Rubio and commenting on Sen. J.D. Vance’s appearance, comparing him to a young Abraham Lincoln.
Despite the suspense, the primary concern seems to be where the potential VP candidates stand on abortion. Trump’s remark about Burgum’s pro-life stance being an issue is interesting since Burgum’s position aligns closely with Trump’s own views on abortion. When Burgum ran for office in 2016, he was seen as a social moderate. He suggested working comprehensively to reduce unwanted pregnancies and described the question of when life begins as theological rather than a governmental matter.
Burgum mentioned that his position had evolved over time. Despite personal beliefs, the political climate in North Dakota is clear. The state legislature passed the pro-life bill with a veto-proof margin, reflecting the strong pro-life sentiment in the state. North Dakota already had strict abortion laws before Roe v. Wade was overturned.
