(BrightPress.org) – Vice President Kamala Harris remains laser-focused on abortion rights while on the campaign trail. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding President Biden’s age and Donald Trump’s recent criminal conviction, Harris has been sticking to her key talking points.
At a recent campaign fundraiser in San Francisco, Harris did not address concerns raised by a Wall Street Journal report about Biden’s mental fitness. Harris also avoided mentioning Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts related to a hush-money scheme. This decision stood out, especially since Harris spoke in San Francisco just a day before Trump was set to hold his fundraiser there.
Harris’ silence on these issues is notable. Team Biden increasingly uses her as a campaign messenger. Despite her low approval ratings in national polls, the campaign sees her as a crucial figure to boost enthusiasm among women and Black voters, two key constituencies for Democrats.
Her recent speech, lasting just ten minutes, focused intensely on the threat a second Trump presidency poses to abortion and contraception access, LGBTQ+ rights, and voting rights for people of color. The speech was in front of about 100 donors at The Chapel, a trendy concert venue in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood.
While Harris has criticized Trump over his conviction in other settings, she chose not to mention the verdict in her speech to the liberal Bay Area audience. This approach highlights her focus on framing the stakes of the presidential election for Democrats, particularly regarding women’s reproductive rights. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, Harris has become the administration’s leading spokesperson on abortion issues.
Harris continues to emphasize the same abortion-centered message while speaking to voters in swing states like Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada, as well as to the Democratic base in liberal areas like the Bay Area.
Assemblymember Mia Bonta, who greeted Harris at the airport and accompanied her to a fundraiser in the Oakland Hills, said Harris remains focused on the threats posed by Trump to abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. With just 153 days until Election Day, Bonta emphasized the importance of these issues over concerns about Biden’s age.
