Missile Hype Explodes — Proof Still Missing

Kim Jong Un’s new destroyer shows how North Korea keeps turning military theater into a real security threat.

Quick Take

  • North Korea says the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon destroyer is now in service.
  • State media says the ship can carry nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.
  • Officials also say the navy’s nuclear armament program is moving ahead as planned.
  • Outside analysts still cannot verify the destroyer’s missile claims or combat readiness.

Kim Presents the Destroyer as a Nuclear Platform

North Korea has commissioned the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon destroyer and is presenting it as part of a wider naval nuclear push. Kim Jong Un used the ceremony at Nampo to say the navy’s nuclear armament is progressing as planned. State media described the ship as able to carry ballistic and cruise missiles that can be nuclear-enabled, but no outside source has confirmed that claim.

The ship matters because it is more than a simple upgrade to an aging fleet. North Korea is trying to show that it can put nuclear firepower at sea, not just on land. That fits the regime’s long pattern of using weapons reveals to send a message to Washington, Seoul, and anyone else watching the Korean Peninsula. It is classic Kim: loud, dramatic, and meant to intimidate.

What North Korea Says the Ship Can Do

State-linked reporting says the destroyer was tested for months before its commissioning. North Korea also claims Kim personally watched missile firing tests from the vessel earlier this year, including launches of cruise missiles described as nuclear-capable. Reports tied to the ship say it has 74 vertical launch system cells, with about 20 larger cells believed to be for ballistic missiles. Those details come from North Korean claims and related reporting, not independent inspection.

That gap matters. A regime that hides almost everything about its weapons should not get automatic trust just because it issues a flashy announcement. The destroyer may be real, and it may be armed, but the most important part of the claim is still unproven: whether those missiles work as advertised, whether the ship is combat-ready, and whether its launch systems can do what Pyongyang says.

Why Skeptics Are Not Buying the Hype

Outside coverage has treated the destroyer as a major development, but not as a verified breakthrough. Reporters and defense analysts say the ship’s exact capability cannot be confirmed from public evidence. The vessel was first unveiled in April 2025, and North Korea says it has now entered service after extended testing. Even so, skepticism remains because no third party has shown radar data, telemetry, or technical proof of a nuclear-capable launch from the ship.

That skepticism is healthy. North Korea has a long record of making bold claims before the world can verify them, and this case fits that pattern. The regime is also hinting at more ships ahead, including larger warships in the future. For Americans who care about strength, deterrence, and a stable Pacific, the real issue is not the propaganda. It is whether the United States and its allies are taking this next step seriously enough.
