The Former President Who Flew Drones Over North Korea’s Capital

South Korea’s ousted former president just received a 30-year prison sentence for sending military drones over North Korea’s capital — and he says he never gave the order.

Story Snapshot

  • A Seoul court sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison on June 12, 2026, over a covert drone operation targeting Pyongyang.
  • Prosecutors claim Yoon ordered the drone flights in October 2024 to provoke North Korea and create a pretext for declaring martial law.
  • Yoon’s defense team says he never authorized the operation and calls it a legitimate response to North Korea’s trash-balloon attacks on South Korea.
  • Yoon plans to appeal the sentence, adding to an already staggering legal fight that includes a prior life sentence for insurrection.

What the Court Decided

Seoul Central District Court sentenced Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison on June 12, 2026. The court ruled that Yoon ordered military drones flown over Pyongyang in October 2024. Judges concluded the goal was to provoke North Korea into retaliating, which Yoon could then use to justify declaring martial law inside South Korea. The court found he had used the military for personal political gain.

This is not Yoon’s first prison term. A South Korean appeals court had previously sentenced him to seven years in prison in April 2026. He also received a life sentence earlier in 2026 on a separate insurrection charge tied to his failed December 2024 attempt to impose martial law. The drone case adds another 30 years on top of those rulings.

What Prosecutors Alleged

Special counsel Cho Eun-seok argued that Yoon “benefited” from the drone flights over Pyongyang. Prosecutors said the operation was designed to “fabricate wartime conditions” and undermine national security. North Korea accused South Korea of flying drones over Pyongyang three times in October 2024, claiming the drones dropped propaganda leaflets over the city. Prosecutors said Yoon used the military as a political tool to manufacture a crisis.

The special counsel’s team formally asked for a 30-year sentence back in April 2026. They argued the drone operation was not a routine military action. Instead, they said it was a calculated move to stoke fear and instability. The court agreed with that framing and handed down the full sentence prosecutors requested.

Yoon’s Defense and What Comes Next

Yoon’s legal team flatly denied the core accusation. His lawyers said there was “no prior order or subsequent approval” from Yoon for the drone operation. They argued the flights were a legitimate act of self-defense. North Korea had been sending balloons loaded with trash and waste across the border into South Korea, and the defense said the drone activity was a direct response to that provocation — not a political scheme.

Yoon plans to appeal the 30-year sentence. His legal team has consistently pushed back against the broader narrative that he tried to use the military to seize power. Whether the appeal changes the outcome remains to be seen. South Korean courts have so far ruled against him at every major turn. The case raises real questions about where legitimate national security decisions end and political manipulation begins — questions that courts in any country struggle to answer clearly when classified military operations are involved.
