Military Veteran Police Officer Killed in Ambush

(BrightPress.org) – Twenty-three-year-old Euclid, Ohio, police officer Jacob Derbin was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call on Saturday, May 11th. A female called for police assistance around 10 p.m. She said her child’s father was present and making threats to harm her and her family. When police arrived on the scene, the woman identified the suspect as Deshawn Vaughn. She said he was still in the area, on foot.

Officers, including Derbin, walked into the backyard of the residence searching for the suspect when Vaughn ambushed them and opened fire. Derbin was shot. Officers returned fire and Vaughn fled the area. Officer Derbin was transported to the hospital for treatment but tragically died as a result of his injuries. Local residents reported hearing several gunshots.

Ohio’s attorney general, Dave Yost, vowed to find Vaughn. Pictures of Vaughn and his vehicle were posted online. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the manhunt. Vaughn was located at an apartment complex by law enforcement agencies from Northeast Ohio. There was a standoff. Vaughn was found dead inside an apartment. Police have not released Vaughn’s cause of death. The standoff will be investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Derbin was in his first year at the Euclid Police Department. He was also a military veteran who served in Kuwait. Derbin and his fianceé Liv Wuebker were planning to be wed on July 27th in Minister, Ohio. Liv’s brother, Skylar Wuebker posted a heartfelt passage on Facebook calling Derbin his “first brother.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine offered condolences to Derbin’s family and the community of Euclid. DeWine also proclaimed all flags on public buildings in Cuyahoga County will be flown at half-staff until the day of Derbin’s funeral.

Euclid police chief Scott Meyer said Derbin was “an amazing human being.” Mayor Kristen Holzheimer Gail called on the community to “come together in solidarity and support.”

Vaughn was 24 years old and a convicted felon wanted for violating the conditions of his community supervision.
